ur%20entire%20life%20dragged%20through%20the%20mud.%20Have%20every%20single%20choice%20you%E2%80%99ve%20ever%20made%20examined%20publicly%20to%20see%20if%20maybe%20it%E2%80%99s%20your%20%E2%80%9Cfault%E2%80%9D%20that%20this%20happened.%20Be%20put%20on%20trial%E2%80%94publicly%E2%80%94in%20a%20way%20your%20rapist%20will%20never%2C%20ever%20will%20be.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3ELet%20me%20tell%20you%20about%20two%20of%20my%20friends%20who%20had%20terrible%20things%20happen%20to%20them.%20The%20first%20is%20a%20man.%20He%20was%20falsely%20accused%20of%20rape%20by%20a%20woman%20he%20was%20friends%20with.%20He%20had%20never%20slept%20with%20her.%20She%20later%20recanted%20and%20told%20everyone%20the%20truth%20of%20what%20%28hadn%E2%80%99t%29%20happened.%20He%20is%20still%20living%20with%20the%20consequences%20of%20that%20action%20today%3A%20it%20made%20it%20very%20hard%20for%20him%20to%20trust%20women%2C%20to%20be%20sexually%20open.%20It%20really%20fucked%20him%20up.%20He%20did%20nothing%20wrong.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20second%20friend%20is%20a%20woman.%20In%20college%2C%20she%20was%20raped%20by%20a%20man%20she%20was%20on%20a%20date%20with.%20The%20man%E2%80%99s%20older%20brother%20was%20very%20important%20in%20the%20ROTC%20of%20that%20college.%20On%20this%20campus%2C%20the%20ROTC%20was%20very%20powerful%2C%20and%20had%20a%20strong%20reputation%20for%20honor%20and%20excellence.%20When%20she%20came%20forward%20about%20what%20happened%20to%20her%2C%20she%20was%20called%20a%20liar%20and%20a%20slut.%20The%20ROTC%20members%20embarked%20on%20a%20campaign%20of%20harassment%20that%20forced%20her%20to%20drop%20out%20of%20college.%20Nothing%20happened%20to%20the%20man.%20The%20administration%20of%20the%20college%20refused%20to%20get%20involved.%20She%20also%20did%20nothing%20wrong.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EI%20am%20truly%2C%20deeply%20sad%20for%20both%20of%20these%20friends.%20I%20really%20do%20understand%20the%20harm%20a%20false%20rape%20accusation%20can%20do%20to%20a%20person.%20It%20can%20ruin%20someone%E2%80%99s%20life.%20But%20it%20still%20does%20not%20compare%20to%20the%20damage%20that%20rape%20can%20do.%20And%20unfortunately%2C%20rape%20is%20more%20common%20by%20a%20factor%20of%20hundreds.%20If%20you%20think%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20know%20someone%20who%20was%20raped%2C%20you%20are%20probably%20wrong.%20Many%20rape%20victims%20are%20never%20able%20to%20come%20forward%20about%20what%20happened%20to%20them.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20Post%20goes%20out%20of%20its%20way%20to%20punish%20women%20who%20speak%20up%20about%20rape%2C%20women%20everywhere%20hear%20and%20understand%20the%20message%3A%20stay%20in%20line.%20Be%20quiet.%20It%E2%80%99ll%20be%20easier%20for%20you%20if%20you%20just%20lie%20back%20and%20take%20it.%20Here%20is%20another%C2%A0%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shakespearessister.blogspot.com%2F2012%2F02%2Fyou-are-shitting-me-you-have-to-be.html%22%3Estory%3C%2Fa%3E%C2%A0that%20I%20happened%20to%20come%20across%20yesterday%2C%20just%20in%20the%20normal%20course%20of%20reading%20the%20internet.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cblockquote%3EI%20was%2C%20as%20a%20teenager%2C%20locked%20in%20a%20room%20with%20my%20rapist%20by%20school%20administrators%20and%20told%2C%20%E2%80%9CDon%E2%80%99t%20come%20out%20until%20you%E2%80%99ve%20worked%20out%20your%20differences.%E2%80%9D%20He%20spent%20the%20entire%20time%20threatening%20to%20kill%20me%2C%20my%20family%2C%20and%20my%20dogs%2C%20if%20I%20ever%20reported%20anything%20he%20ever%20did%20to%20me%20again.%20When%20the%20head%20counselor%20eventually%20came%20back%20to%20that%20room%2C%20I%20was%20asked%20if%20we%E2%80%99d%20managed%20to%20work%20things%20out%2C%20and%20I%20confirmed%20that%20we%20had.%0A%3Cp%3EBecause%20I%20would%20have%20said%20anything%20to%20get%20the%20fuck%20out%20of%20that%20room.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EHe%20raped%20me%20again%20and%20again%20over%20the%20next%20three%20years.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%0A%3Cp%3EAgain%2C%20this%20is%20not%20the%20exception.%20It%20is%20the%20rule.%20If%20you%20go%20looking%2C%20you%20can%20find%20hundreds%2C%20thousands%20of%20variations%20on%20this%20story.%20I%20understand%20why%20people%20don%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20accept%20this%20truth%3A%20it%E2%80%99s%20horrible.%20Nobody%20wants%20to%20think%20it%20is%20their%20mom%2C%20their%20sister%2C%20their%20friend%20who%20things%20like%20this%20happen%20to.%20Better%20and%20easier%20to%20think%20that%20she%E2%80%99s%20lying%20or%20that%20she%20somehow%20deserved%20what%20she%20got.%20For%20women%2C%20it%E2%80%99s%20a%20way%20of%20warding%20off%20evil.%20Maybe%20if%20I%20can%20figure%20out%20what%20she%20did%20%E2%80%9Cwrong%E2%80%9D%20I%20can%20avoid%20her%20fate.%20Did%20she%20dress%20slutty%3F%20Get%20drunk%3F%20Go%20home%20with%20a%20stranger%3F%20Wear%20headphones%3F%20It%20is%20tempting%20to%20think%20that%20if%20you%20are%20a%20good%20girl%20and%20do%20everything%20%E2%80%9Cright%2C%E2%80%9D%20you%E2%80%99ll%20be%20safe.%20The%20truth%20is%20that%20in%20this%20culture%2C%20nobody%20is%20safe.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EEven%20so%2C%20we%20look%20for%20reasons%20to%20excuse%20the%20rapist%2C%20to%20mitigate%20the%20horror.%20Even%20in%20the%20most%20cut-and-dried%C2%A0%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ibtimes.com%2Farticles%2F293801%2F20120206%2Fron-paul-abortion-rape-contraception.htm%22%3E%E2%80%9Chonest%20rape%E2%80%9D%3C%2Fa%3E%C2%A0cases%2C%20and%20even%20in%20the%20New%20York%20Times%2C%20the%20blame%20is%20shifted.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3ERoxane%20Gay%2C%20in%20her%20amazing%20essay%C2%A0%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Ftherumpus.net%2F2011%2F03%2Fthe-careless-language-of-sexual-violence%2F%22%3EThe%20Careless%20Language%20of%20Sexual%20Violence%3C%2Fa%3E%2C%20examines%20the%20case%20of%20an%20eleven-year-old%20girl%20gang%20raped%20by%2018%20men%3A%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cblockquote%3EThe%20Times%20article%20was%20entitled%2C%20%E2%80%9C%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2011%2F03%2F09%2Fus%2F09assault.html%3F_r%3D2%22%3EVicious%20Assault%20Shakes%20Texas%20Town%3C%2Fa%3E%2C%E2%80%9D%20as%20if%20the%20victim%20in%20question%20was%20the%20town%20itself.%C2%A0%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FJames_C._McKinley%2C_Jr.%22%3EJames%20McKinley%20Jr.%3C%2Fa%3E%2C%20the%20article%E2%80%99s%20author%2C%20focused%20on%20how%20the%20men%E2%80%99s%20lives%20would%20be%20changed%20forever%2C%20how%20the%20town%20was%20being%20ripped%20apart%2C%20how%20those%20poor%20boys%20might%20never%20be%20able%20to%20return%20to%20school.%20There%20was%20discussion%20of%20how%20the%20eleven-year-old%20girl%2C%20the%20child%2C%20dressed%20like%20a%20twenty-year-old%2C%20implying%20that%20there%20is%20a%20realm%20of%20possibility%20where%20a%20woman%20can%20%E2%80%9Cask%20for%20it%E2%80%9D%20and%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20somehow%20understandable%20that%20eighteen%20men%20would%20rape%20a%20child.%20There%20were%20even%20questions%20about%20the%20whereabouts%20of%20the%20mother%2C%20given%2C%20as%20we%20all%20know%2C%20that%20a%20mother%20must%20be%20with%20her%20child%20at%20all%20times%20or%20whatever%20ill%20may%20befall%20the%20child%20is%20clearly%20the%20mother%E2%80%99s%20fault.%20Strangely%2C%20there%20were%20no%20questions%20about%20the%20whereabouts%20of%20the%20father%20while%20this%20rape%20was%20taking%20place.%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20overall%20tone%20of%20the%20article%20was%20what%20a%20shame%20it%20all%20was%2C%20how%20so%20many%20lives%20were%20affected%20by%20this%20one%20terrible%20event.%20Little%20addressed%20the%20girl%2C%20the%20child.%20It%20was%20an%20eleven-year-old%20girl%20whose%20body%20was%20ripped%20apart%2C%20not%20a%20town.%20It%20was%20an%20eleven-year-old%20girl%20whose%20life%20was%20ripped%20apart%2C%20not%20the%20lives%20of%20the%20men%20who%20raped%20her.%20It%20is%20difficult%20for%20me%20to%20make%20sense%20of%20how%20anyone%20could%20lose%20sight%20of%20that%20and%20yet%20it%20isn%E2%80%99t.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%0A%3Cp%3EThese%20little%20things%2C%20these%20seemingly%20unimportant%20things%20like%20tone%20and%20word%20choice%2C%20like%20hate%20rags%20publishing%20pictures%20of%20rape%20victims%2C%20like%20all%20of%20the%20tiny%20ways%20that%20we%2C%20every%20day%2C%20as%20culture%2C%20signal%20to%20potential%20rapists%20to%20go%20ahead%2C%20it%E2%80%99s%20not%20so%20bad%2C%20she%20probably%20wants%20it%20anyway%2C%20wink%20wink.%20That%20is%20rape%20culture.%20There%E2%80%99s%20no%20neutral%20ground.%20You%20are%20either%20fighting%20hard%20against%20it%E2%80%94speaking%20up%20to%20defend%20rape%20victims%2C%20not%20laughing%20at%20rape%20jokes%2C%20refusing%20to%20accept%20the%20excuses%20people%20make%20for%20rapists%E2%80%94or%20you%20are%20part%20of%20it.%20Silence%20abets%20rapists.%20And%20THAT%20is%20why%20I%20will%20always%20take%20the%20side%20of%20the%20person%20making%20a%20rape%20accusation%2C%20and%20why%20you%20should%20too.%20When%20the%20playing%20field%20is%20level%2C%20I%20will%20wait%20to%20be%20vocal.%20I%E2%80%99ll%20listen%20to%20both%20sides%2C%20or%20just%20stay%20out%20of%20it%20altogether.%20But%20in%20a%20world%20where%20trying%20to%20bring%20your%20rapist%20to%20justice%20puts%20you%20in%20line%20for%20something%20that%20might%20be%20more%20difficult%20to%20endure%20than%20the%20rape%20itself%2C%20victims%20need%20all%20the%20support%20they%20can%20get.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%0A%3Cp%3EAll%20of%20this%2C%20always%2C%20always%2C%20always.%20I%20will%20always%20assume%20guilty%20until%20proven%20innocent%20with%20a%20rapist%2C%20because%20that%E2%80%99s%20the%20only%20way%20to%20counteract%20the%20game%20of%20putting%20the%20accuser%20on%20trial%20instead%20of%20the%20accused%E2%80%A6%20and%2C%20of%20course%2C%20because%20it%E2%80%99s%20generally%20true.%20Minor%20detail.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%0A%3C%2Fblockquote%3E"
